Bake For Family Fun with Book and Bake...

Sugar Cookies Go Whole Wheat

(Preschool to 2nd Grade Baking Activity)

In addition to delicious eating, Book and Bake learning activities promote reading, order, cause/effect relationships, story telling, American history, eye-hand coordination, visual math terms—whole, portion, fraction and recall.

Materials/Equipment Needed:
• Copy of recipe: Whole Wheat Sugar Cookies
• Ingredients for Whole Wheat Sugar Cookies
• Large bowl
• Electric mixer
• Dry measuring cups
• Measuring spoons
• Liquid measuring cup

Family Activities:
• Visit the library and find a book on cookies
• Read the recipe together.
• Wash hands and gather all ingredients and equipment

Baking Activity:
• Make the Whole Wheat Sugar Cookies

Whole Wheat Sugar Cookies
Makes 3 dozen cookies (@ $ 1.35 or 4 cents each)

Ingredients:
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 egg
1 tablespoon grated orange peel
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Blend with whisk:
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 tablespoons low fat milk 1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg


Roll cookies in: 1 to 2 tablespoons sugar OR sugar and cinnamon mixed

Directions: Preheat oven to 375 ° F.

  1. In a medium bowl, using an electric mixer, cream together sugar and butter until fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  1. Add egg, milk, extracts and mix well. Blend together flour, baking powder, soda, salt, nutmeg and orange peel. Add to egg mixture and continue to mix until well blended.
  1. Shape dough into balls, using about 2 teaspoons each. Roll in granulated sugar. Place 2 inches apart on cookie sheet lined with parchment or lightly oiled with cooking spray.
  1. Flatten cookie slightly with bottom of a cup.

  2. Bake in a preheated 375°F oven for 9 to 10 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on pan for 2 minutes and transfer to wire rack.

Calories/Serving: Makes 3 dozen Cookies
Nutrition: One cookie provides approximately: 71 calories, 1 g protein, 11 g carbohydrates, 1 g fiber, 3 g fat (2 g saturated, 0 trans fat), 13 mg cholesterol, 2 mcg folate, 0 mg iron, 78 mg sodium.
