Instructions

1. Orange-Colored Sugar:
2. In a large zip top bag, mix sugar with orange food coloring. Remove air.
3. Squeeze bag until all of the sugar has become orange.
4. Spread sugar out onto a baking pan and let dry for 2 hours.
5. Donuts:
6. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease donut pan with 12 openings.
7. Melt butter in saucepan. Add apple cider. Stir and set aside to cool.
8. In a large bowl, stir together flour, salt, baking powder and cinnamon; set aside.
9. Combine butter mixture, brown sugar and eggs; stir well.
10. Stir in flour mixture until all is incorporated. Spoon mixture into prepared pan. Tap pan on flat surface to remove air.
11. Bake 7 to 8 minutes. Allow donuts to cool before handling.
12. Buttercream Frosting:
13. In a large bowl, with electric mixer at low speed, combine sugar, butter, milk and vanilla.
14. Beat at medium speed 1 to 2 minutes, until creamy. If desired, add more milk until frosting is spreading consistency.
15. Add green food coloring; mix.
16. Decorating:
17. Autumn Donuts Decorated as Pumpkins:
18. Dip slightly warm donuts in orange sugar. Decorate with green buttercream frosting leaves.
19. Autumn Donuts Decorated as Glazed Apples:
20. Mix sugar, water and food coloring until sugar is red.
21. Dip top of cooled donuts into the glaze and dry on wire rack.
22. Decorate with green buttercream frosting leaves and a pretzel stick for stem.
23. Chef's Tip:
24. Slightly warm donuts are better for dipping in the colored sugar.
25. Store any remaining frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or in the freezer for up to 2 months.
